Little Dixie makes use of the hero who is "ex-Special Forces," the most irritating cliché in contemporary action films. Little Dixie has a number of strong points. Frank Grillo consistently portrays action heroes who are believable to be intense and serious in the right ways. This is undoubtedly also true. Beau Knapp is the other standout, portraying Cuco with genuine menace while deftly avoiding the stereotypes of cartel members on screen. Instead of going big, he shows this guy as someone who controls his sociopathic tendencies, giving off an unsettling sense of danger due to his more subdued demeanour. He calmly admits to Doc's daughter that he killed his first person when he was a child, implying that his method of coping with such trauma was learning to enjoy it.
